Irwin Smith
Irwin started playing golf and caddying in the early 1950’s before playing on his high school team. His love of golf relates as importantly to his several years as a caddy, because “his” player was like a second father to him, and was a terrific player, winning many amateur tournaments, and shooting his age from ages 64-84.
Professionally, Irwin progressed through various positions in the investment management business after receiving a BS and MBA degrees from the University of Wisconsin in the mid 1960’s. He retired from Columbus Circle Investors, a New York based investment management company in the late 1990’s, having served as Chief Executive Officer and Chief Investment Officer for over 23 years. He is currently a managing director of Nakoma Capital, a firm investing client monies in the stock market, located in Madison, Wisconsin.
He is also a managing director of Nakoma Investments, a family-owned firm with investments in venture capital, private equity and real estate. He is on the Board of Advisors at Nat Nast, an apparel company, and Office Power, a company that designs and installs distributed generation to multi-tenant buildings in the New York City area.
He maintains his affiliation with the University of Wisconsin by serving on the Board and the investment committee of the University Foundation.
Irwin lives in north Scottsdale with his wife, Linda. They belong to both The Boulders and The Mirabel Club, and play regularly. They also have a non-resident membership to The Stanwich Club in Greenwich, CT.
Irwin's effect on The Gateway Tour is direct and influential, as he has also sponsored young professional golfers for most of the last six years.
